Heerema has pioneered much of what eventually became common practice in the oil and gas industry.
In the 1950s, Heerema we constructed and installed platforms in Latin America and the Caribbean, we developed a novel
way to fabricate pre-stressed concrete piles. In the 1960s Heerema supported the emergence of the North Sea’s oil and gas
industry by introducing a range of mono-hull crane vessels. These vessels increased lift capacity from 700 to 3,000 mT,
which allowed for a more cost-efficient construction of platforms. This marked the start of Heerema (the current Heerema Marine Contractors) in the Netherlands.
During the 1970s Heerema revolutionized the industry with the launch of the world’s first two semi-submersible crane
vessels, Balder and Hermod. These allowed the industry to install even heavier platforms in less time, and in more
severe weather conditions.
In the 1980s, Heerema started fabricating modules and jackets for North Sea oil and gas companies.
Through acquisitions of yards across Europe this activity became the Heerema Fabrication Group.
In the 1990s the Thialf was acquired, which is still the world’s largest semi-submersible crane vessel.
Dockwise was established, the heavy transport leader in the offshore and construction industries.
In 2000, Heerema acquired INTEC, a specialized engineering and project management firm for the oil and gas industry.
In recent years, we have continued to grow and streamline our operations. The Heerema Fabrication Group sold
its Norwegian yard and acquired the US-based AGA Engineering firm. Heerema Marine Contractors is increasingly
involved in installing complex deepwater infrastructure. The Heerema Group sold Dockwise at the end of 2006 and in 2007 the ownership of INTEC was transferred to WorleyParsons.
Today, we are once again fully focussed on our core business. We are proud to be a healthy company with a strong reputation, excellent client relationships and a dedicated workforce.
